Sports massage gives the ability to target muscle–tendon junctions.
This is a great modality for athletes and anyone participating in regular physical activity. By using various assisted stretching techniques (e.g., proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation), the client and therapist are able to increase tissue flexibility and muscle mobility. There are three specific categories of Sports massage:
- Event — Administered on the day of the event and usually at the site of the event. Usually fast paced and lasts only 15 minutes.
- Maintenance — A full body massage administered in a clinical setting with the intention of minimizing negative effects of exercise and usually lasting 60 minutes.
- Treatment — Also administered in the clinic but is more focused on injured joints or muscles and the surrounding tissue and usually lasts 10 to 20 minutes.
